Overview of the Rule Change
During the GFAA Executive meeting on 26th May 2018, a clarification was made regarding Angling Rule No. 1. This section, located on page 63 of the 2018 GFAA Journal, pertains to the procedures during bait or lure deployment.
Clarification Details
If the mate is handling the bait or lure with the reel in free spool, placing the rod in the cover board is permissible. This action remains within legal boundaries, provided that no drag is applied and the rod isn’t transferred to another angler. The key consideration is that hook setting should not occur with the reel disengaged. Conversely, if retrieving the bait or lure, placing the rod back in the cover board or handing it off constitutes a rule violation, as it implies the hook set while the reel is engaged.
Rationale Behind the Change
The rationale for this update emphasises fair play and the integrity of angling techniques. Understanding that the hook set is a critical phase in game fishing, this rule ensures that all anglers adhere to standardised practices, maintaining the sport’s ethical standards.
